The project involves organising and running a music gig at Arden Road Social Club. The music will take the form of 2 genres, Eastern and Western and the head line act will be a fusion of the two. The venue is within easy walking distance from anywhere in Park Ward and is perfect for the activity. The audience will reflect the ethnic diversity of Park Ward and the theme of the project will be centred on social cohesion; bringing different communities together through music. The gigs will cost very little to attend and audiences will be targeted according to their cultural backgrounds. Food that also reflects cultural heritage will be available at the gig giving the audiences a chance to mingle, meet people of different backgrounds, experience aspects of different cultures and chat.
Music is a medium that almost everyone enjoys It does not take into account political or cultural differences. It is the perfect starting point for discovering common ground and can bring people together in a way that no other activity can. There are definite issues around different cultures not mixing within Park Ward, events that bring people together are the only way in which these issues can be resolved.
Based on its success this could become a quarterly event where people in Park Ward get together and have a good time alongside those from a different ethnic background resulting in a breakdown of the tendency for communities to become insular and hold negative views of people who are ‘different.’
